GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Packers added to their receiver depth, claiming the son of perhaps the greatest to ever catch an NFL pass.
The Packers claimed Brenden Rice off waivers from the Las Vegas Raiders on May 13, according to the NFL’s transaction wire. Rice is the son of Hall of Famer Jerry Rice.
A 2024 seventh-round draft pick by the Los Angeles Chargers, Rice played three games in his rookie season but none last year. He split time last season on practice squads with the New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks and Raiders. The Raiders released Rice on May 11.
At 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, Rice has the size general manager Brian Gutekunst covets at receiver. He has not yet caught an NFL pass. His father’s 1,549 career receptions still stand as the most in league history, 117 more than second-place Larry Fitzgerald.
The Packers also released defensive lineman James Ester to make room for Rice on the roster.
Gutekunst is having a busy week tweaking the Packers roster depth. Rice is the third player he’s claimed off waivers this week, joining tight end Luke Lachey and cornerback MJ Devonshire.
