For the second consecutive day, an NBA playoff series in the conference semifinals could get the brooms out for a sweep.
The Oklahoma City Thunder look to put the finishing touches on their second straight 4-0 postseason series win when they meet the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals on May 11. The New York Knicks were the first team to advance after they demolished the Philadelphia 76ers on May 10 to complete their sweep in the Eastern Conference.
The Thunder-Lakers is one of two Game 4s on the NBA playoff schedule, with the Detroit Pistons vs. Cleveland Cavaliers the other to open the night.
OKC has run roughshod on the Lakers all season, winning seven games by an average of 25 points. One more win and the defending NBA champions will be in the Western Conference finals for a second straight season.
LeBron James and the Lakers have shown they can hang for stretches with the Thunder, as they held a small lead at halftime of Game 3 just as they did in Game 2. But again, they were blown out, losing at home, 131-108, after being outscored by 25 in the second half.
The Thunder are doing it with incredible depth and a complete team effort as MVP finalist Shai Gilgeous-Alexander doesn’t even have to put up prolific scoring performances (10 below his regular season average in the series). And the Thunder have played this whole series without No. 2 leading scorer Jalen Williams (hamstring injury). His replacement, Ajay Mitchell, is doing just fine. He led all scorers with 24 points in the Game 3 win and is averaging 20.7 points in the series.
The Lakers will try to keep their season alive and potentially James’ career without the services of Luca Doncic, who remains out with a Grade 2 hamstring strain. He hasn’t played this postseason.
In the Eastern Conference, the fourth-seeded Cavaliers look to even up their series from the comforts of home and continue their unbeaten streak at Rocket Arena (4-0, three in the first round and a 116-109 win in Game 3 against the Pistons).
In the Game 3 victory, Donovan Mitchell scored a 2026 playoff-high 35 points to lead the Cavs and James Harden came up clutch down the stretch for his best showing in the series. Can they do it again or will Cade Cunningham and the Pistons bounce back to take a 3-1 series lead back to Detroit?
