The Appleton Police Department and several other law enforcement agencies are investigating a fatal traffic crash that occurred around noon on June 18 involving a heavy-duty wrecker towing a loaded dump truck carrying sand.
First responders attempted to render aid to the driver of the vehicle that was struck by the dump truck but the driver succumbed to their injuries at the scene, according to a statement from police.
East Calumet Street remains closed between WI 441 and Stoney Brook Drive. The northbound Calumet Street exit from northbound State 441 will remain closed for traffic exiting for eastbound East Calumet Street as the investigation continues.
Motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes when traveling in the area, plan ahead, and follow posted detours.
According to police, the fatal crash occurred when the tow truck was exiting northbound State 441 onto East Calumet Street via the off-ramp. The wrecker left the roadway and entered the median, causing the dump truck it was towing to become detached, according to police.
The dump truck then rolled over and collided with a vehicle that was stopped in westbound traffic on East Calumet Street.
The investigation is being conducted by members from the Appleton Police Department, Wisconsin State Patrol Inspectors, and the Wisconsin State Patrol Accident Reconstruction Unit.
Responders from the Appleton Police Department, Appleton Fire Department, Outagamie County Sheriff, Wisconsin State Patrol, and Gold Cross Ambulance assisted at the scene.
