NWS issues heat advisory as temperatures reach mid-90s and indices break triple digits

Stop if you’ve heard this before: Wisconsin will experience triple-digit heat indices during the day before stormy conditions rear their head in the evening.

Well, sorry to say, you’re hearing it again. July 28 is just another summer day in the Dairy State, one with similar weather to many a preceding summer days in 2025.

After a few days of relief from the 90 degree temperatures and 100-plus degree heat indices five days ago, both are back for the start of the work week across southern Wisconsin, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a heat advisory from noon to 8 p.m.

The feels-like temperatures won’t break triple digits along Lake Michigan, but it will get close — Milwaukee has a heat index of 97 degrees. Further inland will not get the same relief, getting as high as 105 in some places, according to the NWS.

“80% of southern Wisconsin is expected to see 100-plus heat indices,” Milwaukee-Sullivan National Weather Service meteorologist Aidan Kuroski said.

Later at night, storms will move into the southern portion of the state from Minnesota.

Storms will have weakened by the time they reach Wisconsin at around midnight, but the NWS says they could still produce strong wind gusts along with heavy rain and lightning. Kuroski said details regarding the exact track, strength and timing of the storms will be finalized later in the day, all of which will impact what the heat is like July 29.

Right now, the NWS is projecting triple digit heat indices for the second day in a row in some areas of southern Wisconsin, meaning it could issue an overnight heat advisory.

After that, though, the state will experience a rare and welcome dissipation of heat and humidity, with temperatures dropping into the mid-to-high 70s with dew points down in the 50s.

“Which is super dry compared to what we felt the last week,” Kuroski said.
