After cruising into the Western Conference finals untested, the Oklahoma City Thunder have been tested against the San Antonio Spurs.
But Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder, nonetheless, are back in a familiar spot as they look to pass their final test and get back to the NBA Finals on May 28.
The San Antonio Spurs, however, will look to put the Thunder’s celebration on hold and keep their dream season alive.
It’s Game 6 of the Western Conference finals between the top-seeded Thunder and second-seeded Spurs. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio.
The Thunder are coming off an impressive performance when they bounced back in a big way in taking the pivotal Game 5, 127-114, to go up 3-2 in the best-of-seven series and get within one game of a second straight NBA Finals.
The Thunder used a 40-point second quarter, their highest-scoring period of the series, to take control of the game on their way to their highest-scoring game of the series.
They also increased the defensive pressure on Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama, who had his lowest-scoring game of the series with 20 points on 4-of-15 shooting. Gilgeous-Alexander delivered an MVP performance with a game-high 32 points.
The Thunder continue to be banged up. All-Star Jalen Williams, who last played in Game 2 and has only played in four of the team’s 13 postseason games, is questionable for Game 6 with a hamstring strain. Ajay Mitchell, a player who the Thunder had been turning to in Williams’ absence earlier in the playoffs, is also now injured. He’s out with a calf injury and will miss his third straight game in the series.
But the Thunder just keep plugging in players and keep having success. In Game 5, Jared McCain moved from the bench to the starting role and he shined with 20 points.
The Spurs now hope for a repeat result from the last time they were at home when they suffocated the Thunder in Game 4 as they held OKC to a playoff-low 82 points – 36 below their playoff average.
San Antonio is 3.5 point favorites at home in Game 6.
If the Spurs win Game 6, the teams will play in a Game 7 at OKC on Saturday, May 30. The New York Knicks await the winner in the NBA Finals.
