A Milwaukee man has received a 17-year prison sentence after a wrong-way crash that seriously injured a 33-year-old pregnant woman and caused the death of her unborn child.
Jorge Alvarez Mathuzima pleaded guilty to a felony charge of first-degree reckless homicide causing the death of an unborn child, according to online court records.
He also pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of causing injury while operating under the Influence.
Alvarez Mathuzima, 40, was charged after he drove his car south in the northbound lanes of Interstate 43 on Oct. 26, colliding with another car, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office.
Toxicology testing determined Alvarez Mathuzima’s blood alcohol concentration level was 0.1569%, nearly double Wisconsin’s legal driving limit of 0.08%.
He was sentenced on Aug. 14 by Milwaukee County Circuit Judge David Swanson to 17 years in prison, with 291 days credit for time already served, according to online court records.
Alvarez Mathuzima also was sentenced to eight years of extended supervision after his confinement ends.
