Milwaukee County opens 56 affordable senior housing units in Brown Deer

Brown Deer is welcoming a new multifamily affordable housing development for aging residents and seniors with disabilities.

Set to open on July 24, the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Residences at Woodale Crossing at 4110 W. Woodale Ave. will provide 56 affordable units for seniors, with a quarter of the units reserved solely for seniors with disabilities who have experienced housing instability, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley’s office announced.

On-site supportive services for residents, including social services, independent living support and socialization and skill-based programming, will be offered. The site is also in proximity to Brown Deer Park, public transit, shops and restaurants on Sherman Boulevard, as well as adjacent senior residences and the Bradley Crossing Supportive Housing Community.

“As we look ahead, it’s my hope that our state and federal partners continue delivering investments for Milwaukee County that will empower us to build more affordable housing in the years ahead to lower costs and ensure residents and families can live in the neighborhood of their choice,” Crowley told the Journal Sentinel ahead of the grand opening on July 24.

“My administration is funding the largest number of affordable housing projects in Milwaukee County history. Since being elected, we have invested more than $45 million towards the development of affordable housing, particularly in suburban communities like Brown Deer.

The county worked with Jewish Family Services, Inc. on the development, marking a longstanding partnership between the two entities.

Milwaukee County allocated $2 million of American Rescue Plan Act funding and $1 million of county Housing Services’ HOME Investment Partnerships Program funds as a part of the development subsidy to make the project fiscally possible.

The 14 units set aside for residents with disabilities and in need of on-site supportive services will receive funding through project-based vouchers and county-based housing services rental assistance.

“Woodale Crossing was designed to support residents in living independently while having access to services that help them thrive,” Daniel Fleischman, Interim President and CEO of Jewish Family Services, and Vice President of Housing and Residential Services, said in a statement. “This community reflects our belief that stability, respect, and access to care should be part of every housing solution.”

With the opening of the new development, Jewish Family Services’ campus will provide affordable housing and supportive services for more than 400 residents across its housing developments in Milwaukee.
