The recent article about Ald. Lamont Westmoreland, “Milwaukee alderman obsessed with getting himself better parking,” points up the problem on a city scale of what we citizens see playing out in our legislative branch of the federal government (July 22).
People who have been elected to represent us do not see their role as a public servant. They seem to miss the fact that they have been elected to represent their fellow citizens of a particular constituency, not a political party, a lobbyist or a single perspective. They get sidetracked and, in some cases, reveal their personal motivations, as in this case.
While we do not always know this side of a candidate, it certainly should be a factor in choosing to re-elect an individual. It is my hope that a website similar to Vote Smart could be created that tracks the votes of all elected federal representatives and senators to provide our city or state with an easy source of information about how we are being represented.
Citizens are busy people too, but they want to be informed voters. They want their elected official focused on knowing the issues and working collaboratively to seek solutions for constituents and the community once they get elected.
