El Paso Chihuahuas begin homestand on Cinco de Mayo after historic loss

The El Paso Chihuahuas start a six-game homestand against the Tacoma Rainiers riding a roller coaster that has now become familiar this season.

El Paso won the first three games of its series at Albuquerque to run its winning streak to a season high four games and push to .500 for the first time since the opening weeks of the season, then lost the last three games of the series to fall to 15-18.

The Chihuahuas are now fourth in the five-team East Division of the Pacific Coast League, four games back of first-place Albuquerque.

El Paso made history of the wrong kind Friday night when they lost 26-8 at the Isotopes, marking the most runs El Paso has allowed in its history and the most runs scored by the Isotopes in their history.

It marked the third time since 2005 that a Pacific Coast League team scored 26 or more runs.

Will Wagner with El Paso

San Diego Padres infielder Will Wagner is working through an oblique strain and is doing a rehab assignment with El Paso. He played in two games against Albuquerque, going 1-for-2 on Friday and then again on Sunday.

He was officially placed on the 10-day injured list on March 22 so he is eligible to be activated at any point, but is still with El Paso and is projected to be through much of this month.

Cheech Marin rocks Chihuahuas shirt

Cheech Marin, who was at El Paso’s Comic Con this past weekend with his partner in comedy Tommy Chong, posted a video to their official X site of himself wearing an El Paso Chihuahuas shirt while taking a hit off a joint.

The caption reads “Why do you (smoke emoji) before and after you do anything?” To which Marin says, “It’s like a reward.”

The post was dated Tuesday, April 28.

Streaking Chihuahuas

Leftfielder Samad Taylor heads into the series against Tacoma as the team’s hot hand. He had hits in all five games he played against Albuquerque and now has 19 hits, nine extra-base hits and six walks in the Chihuahuas’ last two series (12 games).

El Paso designated hitter/third baseman Pablo Reyes had two walks in Sunday’s game and has now reached base in all 22 games he has played this season.

Nate Mondou, normally a second baseman and designated hitter, made a pitching appearance in Friday’s 26-8 loss, making him the first position player to pitch for the Chihuahuas since last Sept. 10 when Cody Roberts appeared against Albuquerque.
