WAUSAU − A John Muir Middle School student was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries May 4 after being hit by a Metro Ride bus while being dropped off at school.
The incident happened during school drop-off time, according to the Wausau Police Department. The student got out of a vehicle and ran into the road near the intersection of South 12th Avenue and Callon Street. An oncoming Metro Ride bus hit the student, according to police
Wausau Fire Department emergency medical technicians responded and provided medical care to the student and transported the student to Aspirus Wausau Hospital, according to police.
Diana White, coordinator of communications and marketing for the Wausau School District, told the Wausau Daily Herald in an email she could confirm the child who was injured in the incident was a student at John Muir Middle School but she could not provide any additional information about the student or their injuries.
“We’re very relieved to hear the student is recovering and our thoughts remain with them and their family,” White said.
Police notified the Wausau School District and the district provided services to students on May 4. Both the student’s family and the bus driver are cooperating with investigators, according to police.
Because Metro Ride is a city agency and is involved in the incident, the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office is conducting the investigation.
“Student and staff safety is always a top priority for us,” White said. “While this incident occurred off school property, we are taking time to review our existing procedures and will continue working with local partners to support safe arrival and dismissal for everyone.”
