Like any loyal member of generation Z (and perhaps like any good journalist), the first thing I did when I saw the Museum of the Moon art installation in the Third Ward was take a picture. But whatever I was seeing with my eyes just couldn’t quite be captured on screen.
And I wasn’t the only one tempted to capture the marvel. Even before the festivities kicked off at 5 p.m. Aug 7, passersby couldn’t help but gawk at UK-based artist Luke Jerram’s 3D sculpture of the moon – the centerpiece of the Third Ward’s Festival of the Moon.
“The moon has landed in the Third Ward,” said Jordan Dechambre, marketing and communications director for the Historic Third Ward Association.
The Museum of the Moon art Installation hasn’t visited Milwaukee since 2019, and Dechambre said she doesn’t know when it will be back after this year.
The Historic Third Ward Association organized the festival in celebration of the association’s 50th anniversary. Featuring fashion shows, live performances, family-friendly activities, food trucks and artmaking, the festival runs Aug 7-9 in Catalano Square.
To begin Friday’s festivities, Milwaukee Hittaz Drum Corp and Skylight Music Theatre will perform after opening remarks at 5 p.m. DJ Kenny Perez will take over at 6 p.m., then the Wisconsin Space Program will perform live music beginning at 7:30. The night will end with a fashion show by Edessa School of Fashion at 8:45 p.m. and live music from Dak Dubois at 9 p.m.
