Four-door Mustang unveiled before dealers at Ford Vegas meeting

Ford Motor Co. this week showed dealers plans for a four-door Mustang sportscar, according to three people familiar with the situation, the latest move by the automaker to squeeze value from its passion nameplates.

The envisioned four-door pony car had a gas-powered engine with the potential for a hybrid — but not a fully electric version, according to the people, who weren’t permitted to speak publicly on the topic. The vehicle is expected to arrive in showrooms before the end of the decade, said two of the people, both dealers who witnessed the presentation. The vehicle would appear to be a direct competitor to the Dodge Charger that comes in two-door and four-door variants.

Some dealers also saw the Ford Fathom, the all-electric midsize truck launching next year that starts under $30,000, the two dealers said. The base version seen was described as slick and digital-focused with a simple, no-fluff interior, and few or no buttons and dials. A forward-looking image shown to dealers during a presentation also included a crossover built on the Fathom’s same Universal Electric Vehicle Platform, according to the dealers.

The Mustang move is another example of the Dearborn automaker leveraging the power of a few core model names from its 123-year history — Mustang, Bronco and F-150, to name a few — to boost sales, fatten profit margins and expand the Blue Oval’s appeal.

“We do not comment or speculate about future products,” Ford spokesperson Mike Levine said.

Product plans can change before announcement and launch. Ford in recent years has canceled future models, particularly an all-electric three-row SUV, full-size truck and commercial van due to lower-than-expected EV demand. Although the federal government under President Donald Trump has pulled back on fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions regulations and their enforcement, another administration could reverse course.

One of the dealers who spoke to The Detroit News saw the presentation, describing the vehicle as a winner with a wow factor. The engine sounded like a V-8, the dealer said.

Another dealer expected the vehicle to look more bubble-like, akin to the electric Mustang Mach-E SUV, but said it was more sporty — like a Mustang couple with an extra set of doors. The dealer felt the vehicle could help their store get more into the Mustang sales game for customers who may be reluctant due to concerns about passenger room and harsh weather conditions.

A coupe, the “pony car” that debuted in 1964, has become a cultural icon that’s outlasted competitors. General Motors Co. discontinued the Chevrolet Camaro in 2023. The Dodge Charger and Challenger exited the market before returning in the 2000s and then being discontinued again in 2023. Parent Stellantis NV relaunched the Charger last year with an internal combustion engine after an all-electric Charger failed to gain traction.

Ford executives in recent months have signaled interest in returning to the sedan segment if the automaker can so do profitably. The company announced in 2018 it was exiting passenger cars — other than the Mustang — with the final Ford Fusion rolling off the assembly line in 2020, ceding the market to foreign manufactures like Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. Ltd.

When asked in March 2025 at a Charlotte, North Carolina, Mustang media event if Ford would build a four-door Mustang, CEO Jim Farley downplayed the idea.

The Mustang model shown to dealers at the dealer meeting in Las Vegas evokes the sedan traits of a Porsche Panamera, the third person familiar said. Porsche has found success in branching out from its origins with SUVs, which are now the German sportscar maker’s biggest sellers.

By the end of the decade, Ford has said nearly every vehicle will have a hybrid or multi-energy powertrain choice. Ford will launch five new affordable vehicles by then, four of which will be U.S.-assembled.

The Wall Street Journal first reported that Ford showed dealers the four-door Mustang.

A four-door production Mustang car would be the first of its kind. The badge has appeared on coupes and convertibles, save some prototypes and concepts that never made their way to the assembly line. The exception is the Mustang Mach-E, an SUV that stirred up controversy at its debut in 2019.

Expanding the internal-combustion-engine Mustang nameplate beyond its iconic coupe status could bring risk of badge dilution, said analyst and muscle-car owner Karl Brauer of iSeeCars.com.

“From a purist’s standpoint, every time you change the inherent nature of an iconic model name to something else, you water it down,” said the California-based analyst, who has owned everything from a Mustang GT to a Challenger Hellcat to a Ford GT.

“Corvette and Mustang are two of the most iconic brand names in in U.S. car history. Expanding what any of those names mean beyond their original vehicle category is robbing Peter to pay Paul. It feels like a short-term fix that long-term is more destructive than helpful. It would have been easy for, say, Porsche to make a 911 sedan, but instead they invested brand equity in a Panamera.”

Although the Mustang holds the title of the world’s bestselling sportscar, sales have declined in recent years. It sold more than 45,000 in the United States last year, and sales are up almost 16% through July in 2026. A decade prior in 2015, it sold more than 122,000 copies. The Mustang’s all-time peak was in 1966, when Ford sold about 607,500 of the pony cars.

Mustang has dominated the two-door muscle car segment for decades since its 1964 introduction both in sales and innovation. Its sales dominance was interrupted only by Camaro (1977-78, 1985, 2010 and 2013) and, more recently, by the Dodge Challenger in 2022-23.

When the Challenger coupe and Charger sedan were last available together in 2023, they sold over 121,000 units — on par with the Mustang’s most recent peak of 122,349 units in 2015. Since that time, Mustang sales have been in a steady decline despite Ford introducing a new, eighth-generation model in 2024.

But Ford has experience with entering a segment controlled by Stellantis and increasing the pressure. Having a record start of the year through July, the Ford Bronco off-roader outsold the Jeep Wrangler in three out of the last four months, according to Ford.

The eighth-gen Mustang offers multiple trims with prices ranging from the $34,990, 4-cylinder Ecoboost model to the signature, $48,795, V8-powered GT model to the Porsche 911-fighting, $175,965, supercharged-V8 SC Track Pack Special Edition. The badge also offers track-focused, small-volume models like the race-prepared $146,595 Dark Horse R and the $330k GTD model based on the GT3 race car.

The broad range of offerings is consistent with Ford’s icon strategy in which it has detoured from its old, full-line model strategy to emphasize iconic nameplates.

A four-door Mustang could fit into this strategy, expanding volume sales of a coupe to a broader range of customer. A sub-$40k Mustang Ecoboost sedan could offer buyers an entry-level, four-door muscle car, a $50k V8-powered Mustang GT sedan could compete against the $49,995 Charger sedan, and a $150k Mustang SC sedan could go head-to-head against a four-door Porsche Panamera.

“On Ford’s icon strategy, you’ve got to play to your strengths,” Brauer said. “If the only cards you have to play with are a half a dozen badge names that everyone has fallen in love with — then you’ve got to use those six brand names to spread out across whatever vehicles you make. That’s been the trend of the last 20 years: consolidation. Fewer platforms, fewer models, and more universal usage of you fewer platforms with wider usage opportunities. A four-door Mustang plays into that too.”

Other variants of vehicles were shown during the meeting, but there was especially heavy emphasis on the service side of the business, including performance parts, accessories and other aftermarket offerings, dealers said. Farley, Executive Chairman Bill Ford and members of his family employed at the company all attended, with dealers describing the meeting as one of the most upbeat in many years.

“I’ve never seen that group so energetic,” said Dave Wilson, chairman of the Preston Automotive Group with Ford stores in Maryland, Virginia and Delaware.
