Green Bay restaurant's delivery to TSA agents sparks chain of kindness

It started with carrot cake and then came the kringle and now there’s more dessert on the way for Transportation Security Administration agents at Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport.

To show appreciation for local TSA agents working without pay during the ongoing partial federal government shutdown, Republic Chophouse in downtown Green Bay, stopped by the airport March 24 with three different kinds of cake.

After getting permission to shoot a photo of the delivery, the restaurant shared it on social media and then challenged another local business that knows a little something about sweet treats to keep the kindness coming with the next round of goodies.

Uncle Mike’s Bake Shoppe was quick to take the baton and run with it. The bakery with locations in De Pere, Green Bay, Suamico and Appleton showed up at Austin Straubel on March 25 with six boxes of its famed kringle – and another six for TSA workers at Appleton International Airport.

“A small thank you for the big role they play every day, keeping travel safe and helping so many people get where they need to go,” Uncle Mike’s wrote in its social media post showing the deliveries. “… We feel incredibly grateful to be part of a community that shows up for one another and supports those who serve others every day.”

To keep the sugar buzz going, Uncle Mike’s nominated Delights Bakery and Cafe in De Pere to be next up, and it’s a “yes” from them, too.

“We heard cake was delivered and suddenly it’s a bakery party over there … and we love a good cake party,” Delights Bakery commented on the Republic Chophouse post. “If there’s still a turn to be taken, we would be absolutely delighted to throw our hat (and maybe a few layers of cake) into the ring. Our team would be thrilled to share something special with TSA agents, too.

“Consider this our official, very enthusiastic, request to join the lineup. We promise to make it worth everyone’s while.”

The bakery said it planned to include the Appleton airport, too.

The shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security started on Feb. 13 when Congress sparred over funding for national security measures. It’s causing significant airport disruptions across the country as TSA worker absences soar and employees work without pay, forcing travelers at some airports to wait for hours in long lines at security checkpoints.
