WRESTLING

WIAA State Individual Championships

MADISON – Four boys and three girls from the Green Bay area will wrestle for WIAA state titles Feb. 28 at the Kohl Center.

Two of the wrestlers – Cael Leisgang of Seymour and Taylor Whiting of Lena – will complete unbeaten seasons if they can win titles in their matches at 285 and 114 pounds, respectively.

BOYS

Bay Port’s Alois Schlumpf earned his spot in the 132-pound Division 1 title match against Bryson Busler of Watertown by defeating Ashton Scheele of Westosha Central 7-1.

Schlumpf, now 47-2, is the top seed in his weight class while Busler is the No. 6 seed.

At 144 pounds, Luxemburg-Casco’s Carson Neubert will go for the Division 1 title after pinning Emmitt Becker of Slinger in 1:38.

Neubert, who is 54-1 and the top seed, will face Cade Aaberg of Oregon. Aaberg is the No. 2 seed and is 49-2.

The championship match in Division 1 at 175 pounds will feature the top two seeds in the class going against each other.

Bay Port’s Tucker Athey, the No. 2 seed, advanced with a 12-8 decision over Haiden Carlson of Marshfield. Athey will wrestle top seed Liam Crook of Kaukauna for the title.

At 285 pounds in Division 2, Seymour’s Leisgang will wrestle for the championship after defeating Saint Croix Central’s Brock Swenson 14-8.

Leisgang, who is 41-0, will face No. 2 seed Gatlin Empey of Stoughton, who is 49-1.

GIRLS

Whiting, the top seed at 114 pounds, cruised into the championship match with a 21-5 win by technical fall over Iszybelle Sonnentag of Cadott.

The Lena senior is now 18-0 and will face Emjay Neumann of Manitowoc Lincoln in the title match.

Wrightstown junior Chesney Bartoszek is in the title match at 126 pounds, where she will face No. 1 seed Madilyn Peach of Milton. Peach is 43-0.

Bartoszek (45-1), who is the No. 2 seed, advanced with a 13-9 win over Kylee Kurszewski of Neenah.

At 235 pounds, Mercedes Kruse of West De Pere moved into the title match with an 11-4 win over Lexie Stoflet of Assumption/Pacelli.

Kruse, the No. 7 seed, will face top-seed Izabella Riebe of Wisconsin Lutheran, who advanced to the championship match with a 10-3 win over Autumn King of Bay Port.

GIRLS HOCKEY

WIAA sectional final

Bay Area 3, Lakeshore 1

MILWAUKEE – The defending state champion Ice Bears won the sectional title to advance to the state tournament for the fourth season in a row.

The Ice Bears improve to 23-2 and will play in the state tournament semifinals March 5 at Bob Suter’s LEGACY20 Arena in Middleton.

The Lightning finishes the season with a 19-6 record.

Elizabeth Zunker and Addison Dahl scored in the second period for the Ice Bears. Faye Brunke added a short-handed goal in the third period.

Bay Area goalie Reese Spiering made 16 saves. Lakeshore goalie Elizabeth Bowers made 32 saves.

BOYS HOCKEY

WIAA Division 1 sectional final

De Pere 4, Neenah/Hortonville/Menasha 2

ASHWAUBENON – The Voyageurs advance to state for the first time in program history by winning the sectional title over the Rockets.

De Pere led 2-0 after two periods.

Chase VandEven made 33 saves in goal for De Pere.

De Pere’s trip to state marks the seventh consecutive year a Fox River Classic Conference team has advanced to state.

The Voyageurs are 21-4-1 overall, while Neenah/Hortonville/Menasha finishes the season 21-6-0.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Division 1 regional semifinals

Notre Dame 79, Eau Claire North 27

GREEN BAY – The second-seeded Tritons made short work of the 15th-seeded Huskies to advance to the regional final Feb. 28 at home against Hudson.

Notre Dame raced out to a 52-15 halftime advantage and never looked back.

Kaia Waldrop powered the Tritons with 23 points, while Brianna Breese added 20 and Aspen Abel 18.

Eau Claire North was led by Livia Neumueller with 11 points.

The win moves Notre Dame to 21-4 overall, while the Huskies finish their season at 8-18.

DE PERE – The Redbirds held the Evergreens to five field goals in the dominating regional semifinal win.

Aubree Fischer led De Pere with 22 points and nine rebounds. Allie Neuenfeldt added 16 points and Abby Tassoul scored 10.

D.C. Everest was led by Alisa Chmielewski with four points.

De Pere improves to 21-4 overall and will play at Eau Claire Memorial in the regional final. The Evergreens finish the season 12-12.

SUAMICO – Olivia Williams was on fire from beyond the 3-point arc, making 7-of-11 3-point attempts and finishing with 33 points in the Pirates’ win over the Hornets.

Kailynn Thompson and Melia Lemorande both finished with double-doubles for Bay Port. Thompson had 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Lemorande had 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Bay Port, which is now 20-5 overall, will play at Kimberly against the Papermakers in the regional final.

Preble finishes the season with an 11-14 record.

LUXEMBURG – The Spartans moved above .500 with the win and advance to the regional final with the win over the Panthers.

Luxemburg-Casco limited Plymouth to five first-half points and never looked back.

Leading the Spartans was Sienna Blohowiak with 10 points.

Plymouth was paced by Izzy Stielow with 12 points.

Luxemburg-Casco, now 13-12, will play at top-seeded Xavier in the regional title game.

APPLETON – The top-seeded Hawks built a 20-point halftime lead and rolled past the eighth-seeded Jaguars.

Xavier will now host fourth-seeded Luxemburg-Casco in the regional final.

Brynn Krull led the Hawks with 29 points, while Annika Heimann added 10.

Lauren Seeling led Ashwaubenon with 11 points.

The win moves Xavier to 20-5 overall, while the Jaguars close their season 2-23.

DENMARK – The eighth-seeded Irish outscored the Vikings 11-6 in overtime to stun the bracket’s top seed.

Breana Dickrell led the Freedom attack with 15 points, while Ava Calhoon added 10.

Denmark was led in scoring by Kiarrah Micolichek with 21 points and Allie VanVonderen with 20.

The Vikings took a 24-21 halftime advantage, but the Irish stayed close throughout and the game went into overtime tied 48-48.

The win sends Freedom into the regional final against fourth-seeded Brillion.

Denmark closes its season at 20-5, while the Irish move to 14-12.

BRILLION – The Lions had their hands full with the Thunder, needing key defensive stops to erase a double-digit deficit in the second half to send the game to overtime to pick up the win.

Kaitlyn Schuman and Amaya Brooks both scored 20 points to lead Brillion. Schuman had four 3-pointers, while Brooks was 13-of-16 at the free throw line.

Brillion, which is 17-8, will host Freedom for the regional title.

Seymour was led by Natalie Rudnick with 21 points. The Thunder ends its season with a record of 13-12.

COLEMAN – Reagan Schneider scored 19 points to help lead the fifth-seeded Wolves past the fourth-seeded Cougars.

Algoma took an 18-8 halftime advantage and then held off Coleman over the final 18 minutes.

Vivian Kostreva led the Cougars with 16 points.

The Wolves will next face top-seeded Manitowoc Lutheran on Feb. 28 in the regional final in Manitowoc.

Algoma is 15-8 overall, while Coleman finishes at 15-10.

CRIVITZ – The Blue Devils went on the road and upset the second-seeded Wolverines.

Oconto, which is seeded seventh, improves to 16-10 with the win and will play at third-seeded Kewaunee for the regional title.

Oconto, which outscored Crivitz 14-0 at the free throw line, was led by Kylee Gard with 17 points. Bella Coshenet added 11.

Crivitz, which was led by Kiya Brand with 22 points, finishes with a record of 21-3. Marli Meyers added 10 points.
