Grandson misses mark on Milwaukee's old socialist mayor Hoan | Letter

I was astonished to read Daniel Steininger’s recent perspective lambasting the new sewer socialist movement in Milwaukee (“I’m grandson of a ‘sewer socialist.’ Today’s crop miss mark.” May 17).

Why, from his descriptions of what the “real” Daniel Hoan was like, you’d think the old socialist warhorse was a right wing Republican!

Steininger’s family connections notwithstanding, a good-faith examination of the historical record will reveal Hoan to have been a pragmatic but deeply committed man of the left, who quoted Marx without irony and who always stood on the side of labor against capital.

Steininger is welcome to his warmed-over, Chamber of Commerce boilerplate opinions. But don’t drag the old mayor into it.
