Former Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson nears career-high in loss to Cowboys

Former Wisconsin football icon and current New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson put on a show against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

In one of his most impressive individual performances of his 14-year NFL career, Wilson completed 30 of his 41 pass attempts for 450 yards and three passing touchdowns in the 40-37 loss. He also rushed three times for 23 yards and tossed an interception in the overtime thriller.

Following a relatively uneventful first quarter of action, Wilson kick-started his showing with a 29-yard touchdown strike to wide receiver Malik Nabers in the second quarter to push New York ahead 13-3. He then fired a 32-yard touchdown pass to Wan’Dale Robinson with 2:44 to spare in the fourth quarter. His most significant highlight, however, arrived with under 30 ticks on the game clock.

Facing a 34-30 deficit at Dallas’ 48-yard line, Wilson floated a 48-yard bomb to Nabers, who maneuvered around two Cowboy defenders to secure the toss in the back of the end zone. His highlight made it a 37-34 affair, and the Giants appeared to have stolen a win in Arlington, Texas.

Cowboy kicker Brandon Aubrey converted on a 64-yard field goal as time expired to send it into overtime, where Dallas secured the 40-37 win.

Wilson’s outing was certainly a refreshing one for Giants fans following a 21-6 Week 1 loss against the Washington Commanders. The former Badger completed just 17 of his 37 passes for 168 yards and no touchdowns in his Giant debut.

In 2024, the former Super Bowl champion did showcase flashes with the Pittsburgh Steelers. In 11 regular season games, he threw for 2,482 passing yards, 16 touchdowns and five interceptions, plus took 43 carries for 155 rushing yards and two rushing scores.

He will now look to guide his group to its first win of the season when New York welcomes the Kansas City Chiefs to MetLife Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 21.
