Longtime Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Freddy Peralta indeed found a new home before the Major League Baseball trade deadline, as expected, and he is on his way to the Tampa Bay Rays
The trade trickled out Aug. 2, a little more than 24 hours before the 2026 deadline at 5 p.m. CT Aug. 3.
Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reported that the Rays would be sending outfielder Aiden Smith, the team’s No. 15 prospect on MLB Pipeline, as well as right-handed pitcher Gary Gill Hill (No. 26) and second baseman Emilien Pitre (No. 27).
As a point of reference, former Brewers infield prospect Jadher Areinamo, acquired last year in the trade that brought Danny Jansen to Milwaukee, is No. 17 in the Rays system.
Peralta, traded with one year to go before free agency this offseason by the Brewers, has struggled to a 4.99 ERA this year with the Mets in 22 starts. He’s seen a drop in his strikeout rate, an uptick in walk rate and a big uptick in WHIP, with a 1.478 this year after 1.075 last year and 1.215 the year before.
The Brewers sent Peralta to the Mets for minor-league infielder Jett Williams and current rotation member Brandon Sproat, who has struggled to find consistency in his first full big league season but has a comparable ERA (5.05) to Peralta.
The beleaguered Mets, helmed by former Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns, entered the day 47-65, nearly 20 games behind first-place Atlanta in the National League East.
Peralta, 30, now heads to an organization renown for its work with pitching talent, much like the Brewers, and the team with the best record in the American League (65-45). He’ll join a rotation that also includes former Brewers pitcher Drew Rasmussen, who has thrived in Tampa Bay after he was traded in 2021 in the Willy Adames exchange.
Peralta made two all-star teams in his first eight big-league seasons, all in Milwaukee.
