It’s starting off to be a foggy morning in Milwaukee.
The National Weather Service issued a dense fog advisory Sept. 11 that remains in effect until 10 a.m. for Milwaukee, Sheboygan Ozaukee, Kenosha, Racine, Walworth, Washington and Waukesha counties.
Marcia Cronce, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, said the heaviest of the fog had already begun to dissipate by early morning. In the area of Milwaukee General Mitchell Airport, the densest fog lasted between 11 p.m. Sept. 10 and 4 a.m. Sept. 11. More inland, toward Waukesha, the fog was heaviest between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m., Cronce said.
According to the National Weather Service, the dense fog makes visibility ahead a quarter mile or less.
The fog is linked to rising temperatures in southeast Wisconsin following close to a week of unseasonably cool weather for early September, Cronce said.
“It’s actually a little bit more moisture too — the dew point temperatures, they’re a little higher. So when we cool off, we cool to the dew point temperature, you don’t go below it. And then when the temperature and dew point are the same, that gives us 100% humidity,” Cronce said. “That’s when a good environment for fog can develop.”
Temperatures in southeast Wisconsin will continue to rise into the upper 70s and 80s over the weekend.
Cronce advised people encountering dense fog on their morning commute to slow down and be extra cautious of traffic.
