Flooding closes schools in Outagamie and Waupaca counties

Record or near-record floods in Outagamie and Waupaca counties have disrupted daily life in several communities along the Wolf, Little Wolf and Embarrass rivers, and that includes local schools.

Ahead of the weekend of April 16-17, several schools closed or went to digital learning due to the flooding. Some of those impacts are continuing into the week of April 20.

Hortonville School District: According to a social media post from the district, Hortonville High School is no longer being used as an emergency shelter as of 7 a.m. April 20, and classes and regular schedules have resumed.

New London School District: All public schools in New London held digital learning days on April 16-17, and the district announced via social media that it plans to continue with digital learning days April 20-21.

Shiocton School District: Shiocton schools canceled class April 16, 17 and 20. According to an April 18 social media post from the district, Superintendent Garrett Zimmerman said it wasn’t clear when Shiocton students would be able to return to class: “The building is surrounded by water and nothing will make it recede faster.” He also said he has applied to the state to waive the requirement to make up all missed school days.

Weyauwega-Fremont School District: The Weyauwega-Fremont School District will continue to have classes for all students at Weyauwega Elementary School, Weyauwega-Fremont Middle School and Weyauwega-Fremont High School, according to a social media post from the district. Students who normally attend school in Fremont can instead go to school in Weyauwega. However, if any students are displaced and can’t attend class, the district asks that their families reach out to them.
