An early morning fire burned through the roof of a two-story West Lincoln Avenue apartment building in New Berlin on July 1, forcing the evacuation of eight units.
The New Berlin and City of Brookfield fire departments, who were first called to the apartment complex at 17664 W. Lincoln Ave. at about 4:24 a.m., saw smoke and flames showing through the roof as they arrived. No one was injured.
It wasn’t immediately known how many units were uninhabitable or impacted by the fire, which a caller told officials started in a bedroom closet which contained a furnace unit. The cause of the fire was unknown as the investigation begins, officials from the New Berlin Fire Department said in a news release.
The building is one of a cluster of more than a dozen west of Calhoun Road.
In addition to the City of Brookfield, fire departments from Tess Corners; the Town of Brookfield; the cities of Waukesha and West Allis; and the villages of Elm Grove, Mukwonago and Vernon offered mutual aid. The Salvation Army’s Canteen service truck was also on site to assist residents.
