Ex-Mishicot teacher gets 28 years in child pornography case

MANITOWOC – A former Mishicot High School teacher is set to serve almost three decades in federal prison for child pornography charges.

Ryan S. Schroeder, 38, was sentenced to 28 years in federal court June 16 after he pleaded guilty to one count of repeated sexual assault of a minor student.

U.S. District Judge Byron B. Conway handed down the sentencing, calling the former track coach a “mentor who became a predator” while saying the criminal offense involved “so much more than the production of child pornography.”

Schroeder will be on a lifetime supervised release upon the completion of his term in prison and is required to register as a sex offender under state and federal law.

He was charged with 18 other felonies, all of which were dismissed, according to a plea agreement.

Court documents and arguments presented in court show that Schroeder sexually assaulted the student for two years beginning when the girl was in eighth grade. He also abused another student, a then-13-year-old girl, who informed the school district of Schroeder’s sexual abuse.

After searching his phone, law enforcement found he had sent images to minors. Schroeder pleaded guilty to creating a video containing sexually explicit conduct involving one of the girls.

“This defendant stole the innocence of these children and deserved the very lengthy prison sentence he received,” said First Assistant U.S. Attorney Brad Schimel. “He abused the position of trust given him by the school, parents and society as a whole.”

According to the criminal complaint, law enforcement claims Schroeder admitted to sexually assaulting the first student more than 50 times over a period of two years, starting when she was 14.

Schroeder was then arrested April 16, 2025, after an investigation that started when the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office received reports of alleged inappropriate behavior with students.

Assistant United States Attorney Daniel R. Humble and Timothy W. Funnell prosecuted the case, which was initially investigated by the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office and the Mishicot Police Department.

The Manitowoc County District Attorney’s Office assisted in the investigation.
