Longtime Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Paul R. Van Grunsven is stepping down from the bench in the coming months, and it’ll be up to Gov. Tony Evers to find his replacement.
The governor announced on May 20 he is seeking applicants for the circuit court’s Branch 9.
The vacancy is being created by Van Grunsven’s impending retirement, effective Sept. 4. The new judge will complete a term that ends July 31, 2027.
Van Grunsven was first appointed to the bench in October 2004 by then-Gov. Jim Doyle to succeed Justice Louis B. Butler Jr., who was tapped to serve on the Wisconsin Supreme Court a few months earlier.
At the time of his appointment, Van Grunsven chaired the health law section at the Milwaukee law firm of Kasdorf, Lewis & Swietlik.
He also was an adjunct professor at Marquette Law School, teaching courses that focused on health care provider liability and the liability issues that arise from public service.
Van Grunsven received his bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry from Marquette University in 1983, and his law degree from Marquette Law School in 1986.
Van Grunsven also holds a master of law in health law from DePaul University Law School.
To apply, you can email a completed application form and supporting materials to GOVJudicialAppointments@wisconsin.gov. The application can be found on the “Apply to Serve” page on Gov. Evers’ website at: www.evers.wi.gov.
Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m., Friday, June 19.
Applicants with questions about the judicial selection process may contact the Governor’s Office of Legal Counsel at (608) 266-1212.
