ESPN believes Wisconsin must get lucky with Colton Joseph

In what is far from a boost of confidence for Colton Joseph, ESPN’s latest article looks at the quarterback situation for all 138 FBS teams.

The Wisconsin Badgers quarterback struggles these past few seasons have been well-documented. Joseph, an Old Dominion transfer, is yet another starting QB under Luke Fickell as he enters his fourth year with the team.

Now, all eyes are on a starter entering his third year, but he is making a huge jump up in competition. Last year, Joseph threw for 2,624 yards and completed 59.7% of his passes. He completed 59.9% the year prior and has 32 career passing touchdowns to 15 interceptions.

Joseph is a dual-threat QB, one who rushed for 1,007 yards a year ago. He has 24 career rushing touchdowns, so that’s certainly an element of his game that will set him apart from the rest. That said, ESPN still believes the Badgers have to get “lucky.”

“Well, the good news for folks at Rutgers, Iowa, Wisconsin or Boston College is that there’s really nowhere to go for the offense but up. It was bad last year. It has been bad for a while. The options for 2026 aren’t markedly worse than the options in each of the past few years,” David Hale wrote.

For reference, the Badgers found themselves in Tier 15: Everyone gets lucky sometimes.

In total, there are 25 tiers. Wisconsin isn’t exactly on the bottom, but there is a ton of room for growth, and getting some stability with Joseph would more than help their case heading into a 2027 season where their recruiting class is tremendous.
