Edgar's seventh shut out keeps Wildcats perfect heading into WIAA playoffs

EDGAR – 12.

That’s the total number of points the back-to-back division 7 champions, the Edgar Wildcats, gave up in the entirety of the 2025 regular season.

In a game where even the best defenses tend to bend once in a while, all year long, the Wildcats refused.

In turn, the rabid pack of cats have turned another chapter of Edgar football into a masterclass of consistency and grit – making excellence feel routine.

That grit was on display in Edgar’s 28-0 victory over Abbotsford in the regular season finale on Oct. 17.

The win stretches the Wildcat’s win streak to 21-consecutive games dating back to the 2024 regular season, a testament to a program that continues to impose its will, even when they feel they get off to an unintended start.

Sluggish start

As time expired at Shortner Athletic Park, 51-year coach Jerry Sinz shook hands with each member of his coaching staff.

The Wildcats in their first season of Division 6 ball had just pitched their seventh shutout of the year, even after an uncharacteristic first half in which the Wildcats struggled to find momentum on the ground, and turned the ball over multiple times.

The Wildcats went into the break holding onto a 6-point edge. Then ripped off 22 points in the second half to put the game out of reach.

“We talked at halftime about just getting back to basics, and that worked pretty well,” Sinz said. “Our defense has been playing well and of course, the defense is what’s going to take a guy to the next level on any level, college, pros, whatever.

“Soon as your defense starts going haywire, you’re in trouble. So we got to keep that sound.”

It wasn’t the Wildcats first slow start this season, and in reflection Sinz feels optimistic about how his group hasn’t flinched this season – Oct. 17 against the Falcons was no different.

“They stick together pretty good when things are going rough,“ Sinz said. “Obviously they weren’t happy with the first half, but there was no finger pointing or anything. They stuck together and if they do that, then they can be pretty good.”

It was strength in numbers once again for the Wildcats who saw four different rushers find the endzone for six.

The dominant victory over their Marawood Conference rival helped the Wildcats reach yet another unbeaten season.

Sinz, in his decorated career spanning five decades, has lost count of how many perfect seasons his Wildcats have claimed.

“I think this was either 19 or 20,” Sinz said.
