WISCONSIN RAPIDS − Connexus Credit Union, 1930 Eighth St. S., “is clear” after a bomb threat forced its closure and the evacuation of neighboring businesses earlier in the day Friday, June 27.
The Wisconsin Rapids Police Department posted the update at 2:42 p.m. Friday on its Facebook page and thanked the Wood County Sheriff’s Office for its assistance.
Wisconsin Rapids Police Chief Daniel Hostens told a Daily Tribune reporter earlier Friday that the threat was probably unfounded but the department always takes these types of threats seriously. They closed things down out of an “abundance of caution,” he said.
The Police Department first posted on its Facebook page about the threat at 1:30 p.m. Friday and asked people to avoid the area.
Hostens told a Daily Tribune reporter at that time the department was waiting for “a bomb dog” to check the area.
Laura Huggins, a spokesperson for Connexus, told a Daily Tribune reporter Friday afternoon there was a “reported security threat” Friday at the Wisconsin Rapids branch and because it was an active situation at the time she could not comment further.
Huggins said all employees were safe and accounted for.
Huggins said she expected the Wisconsin Rapids branch to remain closed the rest of the day Friday, but the Police Department said in its 2:30 p.m. Facebook post that the branch would “be reopening shortly.”
