The comeback for Wisconsin football quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. was short lived.
Edwards, who suffered a knee injury in the Badgers’ Week 1 game on Aug. 28, made his return to the field on Saturday, Sept. 20, against Maryland, his former team, for the Big Ten opener.
It didn’t go as planned.
Edwards led the team’s first drive and completed his first pass for 45 yards, a drive that ended with a blocked field goal.
But that was about it for Edwards, who was clearly still not himself out on the field. Danny O’Neil entered on the team’s next possession, though Edwards came in on the second play of that drive.
Edwards didn’t play the rest of the half.
He went to the stationary bike if he returned but he would stay on the sidelines.
Edwards was officially ruled out at halftime. When the Badgers came out of the locker room for the third quarter, he was no longer in his pads.
The Badgers trailed the Terrapins, 20-0.
Billy Edwards Jr. injury update
Edwards joined the Wisconsin program as a transfer from Maryland and established himself at top of the QB depth chart.
However, he suffered a knee injury in the second quarter of the Badgers’ season opener against Miami (Ohio). He missed the rest of that game and the next two weeks – at home against Middle Tennessee and on the road at Alabama.
He was designated as a game-time decision on Sept. 20 against Maryland.
Edwards got the start but was laboring and walking around gingerly on the field. He exited in the first quarter after the team’s second drive and didn’t return.
Danny O’Neil took over and is finishing the game against the Terrapins.
Billy Edwards stats
Edwards exited the game completing one of his three passes for 45 yards.
