After four weeks of Indiana high school girls soccer competition, we’ve seen some outstanding performances. This season, IndyStar is honoring Indiana’s top athletes with our Player of the Week polls.
Congratulations to Cathedral’s Emma Zajac on being voted Player of the Week for Sept. 8-13. Before sustaining a season-ending head injury with 20 minutes left against Zionsville on Sept. 13, the senior goalie had given up zero goals in 140 minutes played last week.
Voting for player of Matchweek 5 (Sept. 15-20) opens Monday and closes Friday.
Here are the top performers from last week (Sept. 8-13).
Sydney May, Hamilton Southeastern
The sophomore forward scored a goal in HSE’s 6-1 win over Fishers on Sept. 10. She added two more in the Royals’ 5-0 victory at FW Carroll on Sept. 13. May is second on the team in assists with five on the year. Her seven goals rank third on the Royals. HSE is 11-0 and ranked No. 1 in the nation on MaxPreps.
Chloe Williams, Brebeuf
The junior goalie helped Brebeuf hand Cathedral its first draw of the season in a 0-0 game on Sept. 10. Williams followed with another impressive shutout performance in the Braves’ 5-0 win at Lawrence Central the next day. Williams has 13 saves this season. Brebeuf is 3-2-3.
Macey Hamelmann, Zionsville
The sophomore defender scored the game-winner in Zionsville’s 1-0 win over previously undefeated Cathedral on Sept. 13. Hamelmann marshals an Eagles defense that also secured a clean sheet in a 4-0 victory over Franklin Central on Sept. 10. Hamelmann has logged 560 minutes this year, the most on Zionsville. The Eagles are undefeated this season with a 7-0-4 record.
Addison Lindell, New Palestine
The senior midfielder recorded four goals last week with back-to-back braces. Lindell helped lead New Palestine to a 5-0 win at Mt. Vernon on Sept. 10 and a 2-1 victory at Whiteland on Sept. 13. New Palestine is 7-3 this season. Lindell is second on the team in scoring with eight goals.
Emma Zajac, Cathedral
Before sustaining a season-ending head injury with 20 minutes left against Zionsville on Sept. 13, the senior goalie had given up zero goals in 140 minutes played last week. Out of Cathedral’s nine wins this season, seven were shutouts. Thanks to Zajac’s elite shot-stopping, Cathedral is a top-20 team in the nation.
Bailey Belden, New Albany
The sophomore forward started the week with a goal in New Albany’s 2-1 away victory over Silver Creek. She scored four goals in the Bulldogs’ 5-2 win against Seymour. On Sept. 13, Belden recorded four more goals and an assist in the team’s 7-0 win over Jennings. New Albany is 6-2 this season. Belden leads the team in goals (14) and assists (5).
Lorianne West, Brownsburg
The junior goalie came on as a substitute for Brownsburg’s penalty shootout against Avon on Sept. 10. West saved three spot kicks and helped the Bulldogs retain the B&O Rotary Bell — an annual trophy awarded in the high school sports rivalry between Brownsburg and Avon.
