Vietnam warns of food supply disruptions as African swine fever spreads

swine fever outbreaks are spreading in Vietnam, threatening to disrupt food supplies in the Southeast Asian country, Reuters reported.

Vietnam has this year detected 514 outbreaks in 28 out of 34 cities and provinces nationwide, the government said in a statement, adding that the authorities have culled more than 30,000 infected pigs.

African swine fever has disrupted the global pork market for years. In the worst outbreak over 2018-19, about half the domestic pig population died in China.

Vietnam in 2023 approved the domestic commercial use of its first home-grown African swine fever vaccines, however, the rate of vaccinated pigs remains low.

Brownsville Fire Company Receives $2,500 Gift from Compeer Home

The Brownsville Fire Company received a $2,500 gift from Compeer Home in recognition of its department’s selfless service to others. The gift is in honor of National Heroes Day, founded in the aftermath of the Aurora, Colo., theater shooting on July 20, 2012, to pay tribute to everyday heroes – from first responders to civilians who jump into action without regard to their own safety. Jenifer Oechsner, one of Brownsville’s volunteer emergency medical responders, nominated the department.

Oechsner said, “We’re very appreciative of this gift. There are so many apparatuses that we need and can’t afford. We’ll get on a call and think, ‘I wish we had this to help us.’ With this extra funding, we hope we can turn some of those wishes into realities.”

Three winners were drawn from 1,429 nominated departments.
