AAUW Sheboygan Foundation STEM event returns Nov. 8 with chance to empower young minds

AAUW Sheboygan STEM Foundation will host its eighth annual STEM event inviting girls in grades 6 to 9 to step into the world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. This hands-on experience is designed to inspire the next generation of female leaders in STEM fields.

Mark your calendars for Nov.  8 as the American Association of University Women Sheboygan STEM Foundation prepares to host its highly anticipated STEM event at Sheboygan South High School. This initiative is dedicated to empowering young girls in grades 6 through 9, providing them with an enriching environment to explore the diverse fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The event, which started in 2017 and has gained popularity and significant local business support over the years, will feature inspiring UW Badger Talks guest speaker Zain Abhari, interactive workshops and engaging hands-on activities designed to spark interest in STEM subjects.

Participants will have the chance to work on real-world problems and learn about various STEM career paths that they may not have considered before.

Only 26% of women who enter the U.S. workforce enter fields in the STEM fields. Middle school girls are especially vulnerable to a decrease in self-esteem and gender stereotyping. The AAUW Sheboygan STEM Foundation event helps to counter that.

It’s crucial to encourage young girls to explore their interests in STEM. The Sheboygan AAUW STEM Foundation is committed to showcasing the vast opportunities that exist for women in these fields, ultimately helping to build their confidence and skills.

In addition to skill-building activities, attendees will also benefit from networking opportunities with local professionals who can provide insights into their careers and experiences.

Sheboygan AAUW aims to create a supportive community where young women can connect with role models and mentors.

Parents are encouraged to register their daughters for this transformative experience. The AAUW Sheboygan STEM event promises to be a day filled with inspiration, learning and fun as it cultivates the next generation of female innovators.

Abhari, the STEM event keynote speaker for this year, is a UW-Madison research assistant in the UW-Madison Bergmann Lab Physics Department. She is a Ph.D. candidate in physics studying ultrafast X-ray spectroscopy and non-linear optics. She has carried out cutting-edge technology experiments in X-ray, laser and optics in a variety of international facilities across the globe.

Registration deadline is Oct. 31. How do you sign up?
