District: 8-1A DI

2024 record: 7-4, 4-1

Head coach: Lee McCown

Most recent district championship: 2012

What to know

Robert Lee returns one of the most dynamic six-man football players in the state of Texas. Spread back Brenner Sherwood finished last season with 2,186 yards and 32 touchdowns passing, adding 177 carries for 2,013 yards and 41 touchdowns rushing to earn All-West Texas Six-man MVP.

Along with Sherwood, the Steers return four starters on offense and defense, including All-West Texas wide receiver Nate Samaniego, spread center Brennan Hood and linebacker Edward Samaniego. McCown said he is excited for defensive lineman Wyatt Bosworth and wide receiver Noah Gonzales to return after they missed time last season with injury.

After losing to Westbrook in the bi-district round 116-110 — the sixth-highest scoring six-man game in Texas high school football history — McCown said his team learned a lot about what it takes to win in all three phases of the game.

The Steers return a load of talented upperclassmen from last year’s team and look like a team ready to take off this season. If they can stay healthy, Robert Lee can push Water Valley for a district championship and a deep postseason run this year.

Coach Lee McCown on the 2025 season

“We think we’re a good team, and we know the work that has to go into that,” McCown said. “We’ve had some good seasons, but we don’t have a gold football to prove it. We hadn’t won the district and we hadn’t won a playoff game. So, we’re just hoping to prove this year that we belong there and hope to get some gold trophies. Because although we’ve said we had a good season, we’ve got nothing to really show for it.”
