Speedway launched in 1952 as Speedway 79 in Michigan and was purchased by Marathon Oil — known at the time as the Ohio Oil Company — seven years later.

Today, the convenience store chain is owned by 7-Eleven and has locations stretched across the Midwest, East Coast and Southwestern regions of the country. With over 40,000 employees and nearly 4,000 locations nationwide, Speedway has become one of the most successful convenience store chains in the country.

Where is it?

The new Speedway gas station and convenience store will be located at 2208 Joe Battle Blvd. in East El Paso, according to the city’s permit and licensing page.

The new site is across the street from a Circle K gas station at the intersection of Joe Battle and Pebble Hills boulevards. The new Speedway is not far from a small subdivision and just down the street from a WestStar Bank location.

What was there before?

The new Speedway location will be a new construction site atop a currently vacant lot.

Construction will consist of a new, one-story convenience store and corresponding fueling sites.

Who is the contractor?

The contractor for the project is not listed on the city’s website, but the applicant is Melissa Chavez of the Dimension Group in Dallas, Texas. The owner is listed as JBPH El Paso Retail Partners Ltd.

The project is valued at $1.2 million.
