The endowment is the lifeblood of a college or university. The higher a school’s endowment typically means the higher prestige it holds world wide. So where does the University of Texas rank against its fairly new conference mates in the SEC?
The endowment speaks to power, influence, wealth and a school’s quality. Better, more prestigious institutions generally have a larger endowment, be it from donations, assets, real estate or securities. A school’s endowment funds an institution’s operational expenses. But it also continues to be added to and lives in perpetuity.
Texas has one of the highest in the nation and tops the SEC by a wide margin. UT trails just Harvard nationally (fiscal 2024). Texas is generally in the top five nationally, along with Yale, Stanford, Harvard, Penn and Princeton.
The University of Texas has the largest endowment of any public school in America. Texas A&M is second.
There is also a big disparity in endowments among schools in the US, and the SEC for that matter. One fifth of institutions own four fifths of total endowment wealth. The bottom 20-percent of institutions own about 1-percent of the endowment pool.
In the SEC, Texas’ endowment fund of $47.5 Billion is almost equal to the rest of the conference combined of $49.82 Billion. There is definitely a large disparity among SEC members. Texas, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt dwarf the rest of the schools in the league.
