Week 11 rookie addition could transform Cowboys' defense through second half of 2025

When the Dallas Cowboys drafted cornerback Shevon Revel in the third round this past April, they didn’t know when exactly this shiny new toy would make it to the field. The 6-foot-2, 202-pound product of East Carolina blew out his knee for the Pirates in 2024. Rehab was expected to extend into the 2025 season leaving the return date TBD. Actived to the 53-man roster this week, it appears the return date is now.

How much of a role Revel plays early on is unknown. The 24-year-old comes from modest college program with only 15 career starts on his resume. He’s a raw prospect who’s returning from injury so it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Cowboys ease the rookie into things this season. Yet owner Jerry Jones recently said Revel and another teammate are going to “hit the ground running” this week. It’s a big statement for a player who has yet to take a single NFL snap.

How slowly that goes depends on Revel’s readiness and the Cowboys’ neediness. Dallas’ cornerback situation has been a disaster in 2025 with even their former All-Pros Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland struggling to perform. This poor performance by this secondary could force Revel onto the field sooner rather than later. It could also allow Revel to be enormously impactful if he proves he’s up to the task.

If the Cowboys can get competent CB play from Revel on the outside, it could provide a trickledown effect throughout the secondary. Safeties could play more single high coverages, allowing extra defenders in the box and smaller windows in the middle of the field. Much could be gained by Revel’s presence if he plays up to his potential this season.

As a pure prospect, Revel is seen as an elite talent. His ability to match physicality in man coverage is in a league of its own and his work ethic and willingness to tackle make him a coach’s dream. If it wasn’t for the injury 14 months ago, there’s a good chance he would have been a first rounder. That’s how good of a prospect Revel is.

If Revel can hit the ground running and become a standout performer in 2025, he could spark a significant transformation on the Dallas defense. The line already looks stronger with Quinnen Williams set to make his Cowboys’ debut. The linebacker group looks much improved with Logan Wilson and DeMarvion Overshown set to make their 2025 debuts. The return of Malik Hooker should help considerably, and the week of rest should provide a spark to CBs Caelen Carson and Bland as well.

It might be unlikely for Revel to come in and make a big difference in his first active weeks of the season but it’s not unrealistic. The stars are aligning across the defense with a special role waiting for Revel. The question is will he be ready to stand up and seize the opportunity?
