Police at West Texas A&M University in Canyon are investigating a possible hate crime that took place on and off campus involving a phone scam.
The University Police Department at WT said it received a report Wednesday, May 6 of a hate crime involving intimidation through a phone scam that occurred between May 4 and May 6. The incidents were reported to have occurred both in the VERO building and off campus, authorities said.
According to police, a person used threatening words or actions that caused another person to reasonably fear for their safety. The incident is being investigated as a hate crime because there is evidence the individual targeted the person because of their actual or perceived race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnicity, national origin, disability. No physical injury was involved.
