Texas Tech's 2027 recruiting class is trending to be historic

The 2026 recruiting class that Joey McGuire was able to sign was the highest-ranked high school class in the modern era of college football (since 2000). The Red Raiders finished 18th nationally, while the previous best class was 19th nationally in 2011 under Tommy Tuberville. But the defending Big 12 champs aim to continue to elevate this program to even higher levels with the 2027 recruiting class.

On Friday, Texas Tech received a commitment from four-star wide receiver Julian Caldwell. He is the ninth player to commit to the Red Raiders in the 2027 class. Another Red Raider target also just announced his commitment date for May 15th. Texas Tech is currently one of six teams with multiple five-star commitments in the 2027 cycle. Just how high can this class finish? Here is where everything stands in early May.

Highest-ranked recruit in program history

The blue-chip recruits are flowing to West Texas in an unprecedented fashion. This Red Raider 2027 recruiting class is headlined by On3 and Rivals number one overall-ranked player, defensive lineman Jalen Brewster. The 6’-3’’ 300-pounder from Cedar Hill, TX, is described as a “dangerous pass rusher from any spot,” and “has legitimate game-wrecking moments on film,” according to On3’s scouting report. The previously highest graded high school recruit the school has ever signed was wide receiver Micah Hudson. Brewester would surpass Hudson as the highest graded recruit to ever ink a commitment to the Red Raiders out of high school.

Every top Texas recruit goes through Lubbock

As of this publication, seven of the 21 highest-rated prospects in the state have verbally committed to Texas Tech. That includes a top-five quarterback in Kavian Bryant, two top-15 ranked wide receivers, a top-10 linebacker, a top-10 running back to join the best running back room in the country, and two game-wrecking defensive linemen. The Red Raiders currently hold the No. 2 spot nationally for their current 2027 recruiting class. The next-closest class in the Big 12 is Baylor, which is 35th nationally. Texas Tech’s grip on being the new flag-bearers program of the Big 12 only continues to strengthen.
