Texas Tech WR Coy Eakin blown away by recovery from QB Will Hammond

The Texas Tech Red Raiders had an obstacle pop up in the road earlier this spring when quarterback Brendan Sorsby was removed from the picture after mutually parting ways following his gambling scandal. This left a team with high aspirations to make it back to the College Football Playoff a bit high and dry, without a clear-cut QB answer.

Behren Morton was gone, and Will Hammond, the projected backup QB, was still recovering from a torn ACL. However, recent developments show that Hammond is on an incredible injury timeline and could be back as soon as Week 1 for the Red Raiders.

It’s a recovery that has left Texas Tech wide receiver Coy Eakin in awe.

“Dude is probably one of the most consistent people I’ve ever been around,” Eakin said, courtesy of Daily Toreador’s Cory Whitman. “I went and threw with him in May during our time off, and I was like, ‘how’re you feeling?’ and he said, ‘dude I’m already hitting like 20.9 miles per hour in my rehab.'”

This comes the same week as Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire revealed that Hammond could play in Week 1 of the season against Abilene Christian, two weeks earlier than the original timeline of Week 3 against the Houston Cougars for the start of conference play.

Eakin, who has hauled in 1,705 yards of passes and 15 touchdowns over the last four years in Lubbock, has seen some solid QB play in his time, and he seems to be excited about what’s to come with Hammond under center.
