The Texas Tech football team plans to start Will Hammond at quarterback against Oklahoma State, but Behren Morton will be available, two sources with direct knowledge told the Avalanche-Journal on Thursday, Oct. 23.
That’s the same situation as last week, when Hammond started and played the full game at Arizona State, but Morton was available on an emergency basis.
Morton, who had started 20 consecutive regular-season games before then, has been dealing with a lower-leg injury. He originally suffered the injury in the season opener against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and aggravated it in the Oct. 11 game against Kansas.
Tech (6-1, 3-1 in the Big 12) hosts Oklahoma State (1-6, 0-4) at 3 p.m. Saturday at Jones AT&T Stadium. It’ll be the third career start for Hammond, a redshirt freshman.
Arizona State dealt the Red Raiders their first loss of the season last week, winning 26-22 on a touchdown with 34 seconds left in the game. Hammond played the whole way, completing 22 of 37 passes for 167 yards and 2 touchdowns. He was sacked twice, intercepted once. He rushed 15 times for 47 yards and a touchdown.
For the season, Hammond is 60 of 94 passing for 578 yards with 6 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. He’s rushed 39 times for 278 yards and 5 TDs.
