Texas Tech football quarterback Behren Morton left the Big 12 opener on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Utah after taking a hit to the helmet early in the third quarter.
Morton was scrambling for yardage on a second-and-28 play. As Morton went down, Utah linebacker Johnathan Hall came in low to secure the tackle, and Hall’s shoulder hit Morton’s head, which then hit the turf at Rice-Eccles Stadium turf. Officials reviewed the play and determined there was no targeting infraction.
Morton was subsequently escorted to the locker room by a member of the Tech medical staff.
A Tech official subsequently said during the third quarter Morton was ruled out for the rest of the game.
Tech led Utah 10-3 at halftime, and the play occurred on the first series of the second half. It was the second time in the game that Morton was visibly shaken up. In the first half, he left the game briefly after being taken to the ground on a hard hit from Utah defensive end John Henry Daley on a pass rush.
