Today’s college football recruiting age is interesting, to say the least, and for those of us in our early to mid-30s, we’re now seeing the younger siblings and sons of current or former players making their own names on the field. On Monday night, it was revealed that the brother of current Florida starting quarterback DJ Lagway received an offer from Texas A&M in the 2028 cycle.
While head coach Mike Elko and his staff’s focus is on locking down the 2026 class and laying the groundwork in the 2027 cycle heading into next summer, Lagway, who is currently a sophomore cornerback at his brother’s alma mater, Willis High School, isn’t considered an elite prospect at this stage, and as only received two other offers from New Mexico and Sacramento State.
However, it’s important to note that before DJ Lagway became the No. 1-ranked signal caller in the 2024 recruiting class, he was not seen as a future Power 4 starter early in his career, before his impressive size and arm strength were on full display during his final two high school seasons.
Again, Mike Elko, known for his development background in the secondary, especially at cornerback, likely sees something in the younger Lagway’s game that will result in more offers over the next few months. For those looking deeper into this interesting news, after Florida head coach Billy Napier was fired, speculation regarding DJ Lagway’s future in Gainesville gained new life.
However, with Texas A&M currently sitting at 8-0 behind starting quarterback Marcel Reed’s elite play, it’s hard to see Elko recruiting Lagway’s brother to gain traction with the Florida signal caller, especially knowing Reed is set to return in 2026.
In five games this season, Jamal Lagway has recorded 24 tackles and three pass deflections.
