Texas A&M no longer participating in Players Era Festival, Maryland takes Aggies' spot

After taking the head coaching position with Maryland, former Aggie head coach Buzz Williams is taking Texas A&M’s spot in the highly-touted Players Era Festival during Thanksgiving week.

The news of the Aggies’ departure from the list of teams participating in the tournament on Tuesday sparked considerable controversy across the college basketball landscape, as the three-day tournament guarantees $1 million to schools competing. If Texas A&M were to be competing like the program did in 2024, the Aggies would also have the opportunity to gain an additional $1 million if they won the 18-team competition.

Recent NIL regulations and legislation enabled the creation of this historic event last season, as the Oregon Ducks defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide in the championship game. This year’s pot will look a little different, as the stakes are raised even higher with an overall pot of $20 million to be dispersed to the schools that perform well.

With the departure of the Aggies from the tournament due to Williams leaving the program to coach the Terps, here is the official schedule per CBS Sports:

Monday, Nov. 24

Tuesday, Nov. 25

Wednesday, Nov. 26

The rest of the matchups will depend on the results from the Monday and Tuesday slate. Programs that go undefeated to start will be pooled into the championship round on Wednesday. If more than two teams finish 2-0 by the end of Tuesday, point differential and total points scored/allowed will come into play.

With all that being said, this was a huge missed opportunity for the Aggies. Unfortunately for first-year head coach Bucky McMillan and this year’s staff, it was totally out of their control. If Texas A&M had been granted the opportunity to participate in this year’s Players Era Festival, the prize pool would have significantly benefited the program by allocating a substantial amount of funds toward NIL compensation.

Now that Williams and the Maryland men’s basketball program have taken over the position formerly held by the Aggies, the pressure is on for the Terps to make the most of it. For McMillan and company, it is time to move forward and focus on establishing “Bucky Ball” in Aggieland.
