Texas A&M junior forward named 'Beast of the Week'

This offseason, second-year Texas A&M basketball head coach Bucky McMillan and his staff are hard at work this summer, working to get the current 2026-2027 roster, now featuring seven new additions from the transfer portal, in tip-top physical shape, which is vital for the Aggies to successfully play in McMillan’s fast-paced system.

One of the program’s key returning players, Indiana transfer forward Mackenzie Mgbako, missed all but seven games during his first season in College Station, as the former five-star product was sorely missed given his NBA-level talent. This summer, it was revealed that Mgbako will return to practice next month and is participating in conditioning drills during this week’s intense workout session.

Before reinjuring his foot, Mgbako averaged 10.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, and shot 39% from the field and 34.3% from beyond the arc, but did not look fully healthy, making his early exit unsurprising. Still, the fact that the Aggies made it to the NCAA Tournament, losing to Houston in the Round of 32, was quite the achievement and proved that with an even more talented roster, the sky is truly the limit.

Mgbako will be a significant part of the Aggies’ chances of making it back to the postseason, and combined with transfer shooting guard PJ Haggerty, McMillan will be working with two likely 2027 NBA draft selections throughout the season. On Friday, Mgbako was named “Beast of the Week” due to his impressive performance during Texas A&M’s offseason workouts.
