The transfer portal is officially open, and Texas A&M baseball has now lost its second pitcher from an already thin and underperforming staff. With a major roster overhaul looming, rebuilding the pitching room will be one of the program’s most urgent offseason priorities.
That process begins without a pitching coach in place. After back‑to‑back disappointing seasons on the mound, A&M elected not to retain Jason Kelly, leaving the Aggies in a holding pattern as they search for his replacement. In the meantime, the staff will attempt to keep the remaining arms on board, but as Tuesday showed, that’s easier said than done.
Freshman right‑hander Luke Billings announced he will enter the transfer portal after just one season in Aggieland. Billings made only three appearances in 2024, finishing with a 40.50 ERA, three strikeouts, and three walks across 1.1 innings. The raw numbers don’t tell the full story.
He flashed real promise in his debut against Houston, striking out three with one walk in a scoreless outing. His struggles came in SEC play, where he allowed six total runs against Florida and Auburn despite giving up just two hits. Command issues, not stuff, were the culprit, and the talent remains evident for a program willing to invest in his development.
Billings becomes the second pitcher to depart after the midseason transfer, as Michael Bollinger entered the portal earlier this spring. For a staff already stretched thin, losing two arms before hiring a new pitching coach underscores the challenge ahead.
Texas A&M will need to be aggressive in the portal to stabilize the rotation and bullpen, and the incoming pitching coach will inherit a room in transition. The search and the rebuild now take on even greater urgency.
