After being announced as part of the Bryan-College Station Regional field, Lamar’s baseball program is undergoing internal changes before its contest against Texas A&M on Friday.
According to reports, Cardinals head coach Will Davis is set to become the new head coach of the Houston Cougars after Lamar’s run in the NCAA Tournament concludes. Davis has spent the last decade leading the Cardinals in Beaumont, Texas, while becoming the second-winningest head coach in program history. His club captured the 2026 Southland Conference Tournament and the program’s first regional appearance since 2010.
Lamar drew a rematch against Texas A&M for its opening contest in the College Station Regional, after dropping the regular-season matchup 25-5 at Blue Bell Park. While Davis’ departure could create an extra distraction for the Cardinals, he made it clear that his and the team’s focus is on winning.
The Cardinals finished the season with a 1-6 record against teams ranked in the top 25, with their sole win coming against then-ranked No. 13 Kansas on Feb. 18.
Lamar’s strongest quality comes on the mound, where they ranked second in the Southland Conference with a 4.47 ERA in 2026. Travis Lutz and Chris Oliver have been the Cardinals’ best arms this season, leading the conference with two of the best ERAs. Oliver has recorded the second-most strikeouts among pitchers in the Southland with 103 this year.
They will face one of their most difficult tasks to date on Friday, as they face a dominant Texas A&M lineup. The Aggies rank first in the SEC with a .301 batting average and second with 114 homers. Lamar’s pitching staff will face the dynamic duo of Gavin Grahovac and Caden Sorrell, who have emerged as two of the most elite hitters in the country.
Davis has the opportunity to leave Lamar on a high note at the College Station Regional this weekend, but the Cardinals face an incredibly talented field that includes USC, Texas State, and Texas A&M.
