Tennessee Titans trade former Longhorn T'Vondre Sweat to NY Jets

As the Tennessee Titans continue to remake their roster, former Longhorn T’Vondre Sweat is on the move. On Thursday, Sweat was traded to the New York Jets for pass rusher Jermaine Johnson. While the trade can’t be finalized until the start of the new league on March 11, it is the latest move that marks a teardown of the Jets’ defense.

In Sweat, the Jets are getting a player who has been highly productive since being selected 38th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. During his career as a Titan, the Texas native recorded 85 total tackles and three sacks in 29 games. He was limited to five games last season due to injury.

Now that Sweat is healthy, he will be looking to make his mark with the Jets. He is signed through the 2027 season and only carries a $1.7 million cap hit. If he can continue to improve his play, then Sweat could be looking at a large payday when he hits free agency.

While the Jets are hoping to help Sweat take his game to the next level they are saying goodbye to a former pro bowler. During the 2023 season, Johnson burst onto the scene with a career high 7.5 sacks. While that created optimism to the future, the Florida native was limited to just two games the following season due to a torn achilles.

Although Johnson has not been the same since his injury, there will be less pressure on him in Tennessee. On a team full of young talent, the talented defensive end will get to start over while showing that he still has plenty left in the tank. In four seasons with the Jets, Johnson had 141 tackles.

With the start of the NFL league year just weeks away, trade activity should start to heat up as General Managers look to build Super Bowl contenders.
