Sinton's Mykha Green poised for history in breakout high school football season

SINTON — Sinton running back Mykha Green knew the bar had been set high after the departures of star players Triston Handson, Jacoby James and Derek Garcia.

Green had already proven himself as a reliable playmaker alongside the Pirates’ explosive trio, but this season he’s made a name for himself by transforming into the star his teammates and coaches always believed he could be.

With the playoffs set to begin Friday, Green finds himself on the brink of history after his 178-yard rushing performance against Rockport-Fulton on Nov. 7.

Green currently has 3,264 yards rushing for his career and is 27 away from breaking the school record set by former player Tyler Handson.

“What’s so unique about Mykha is that he’s so humble about everything,” Sinton coach Michael Troutman said. “He doesn’t really pay attention to the stats. He just wants to play for the team and do well for his coaches. It’s not about stats. Of course we want to win but it’s about the team. He is the ultimate team player.”

As Troutman mentioned, Green does not seek attention, but his performance on the football field speaks for itself.

In every game this season, Green has led the Pirates in rushing, including a 369-yard rushing performance against District 15-5A Division II champion Gregory-Portland on Sept. 19.

Still, Green said he wouldn’t be where he is without the contribution of his teammates and coaches.

“I have a great team,” Green said. “This is the team I grew up with. It’s a really good connection between all of us and it’s a lot of memories that continue to build up as we go on. It’s been a great season so far.

“Coach Troutman is a great coach,” he added. “We need that discipline to set you right and coach Troutman has been on me for six years. He’s a great coach and I wouldn’t trade him for any other. I have a good connection with all of our coaches.”

The Pirates’ streak of six consecutive district titles shows the program’s consistency of getting things done, regardless of who is on the football field.

Even with graduating players, the program continues to turn young athletes into playmakers, including Green, who has showcased his talent since his arrival on varsity three years ago.

“I put a lot of work in during summer workouts,” Green said. “Working out and conditioning. My inspiration is to retire my whole family so they don’t have to work. I want them to chill while I do what I do.”

Despite the record in sight, Green and Troutman remain focused on the postseason.

Sinton will open the UIL playoffs against La Grulla at 7 p.m. Friday at Gruy Stadium in Hebbronville.

The Pirates enter the contest averaging 41 points per game and their defense has held opponents to 18 points per contest.

“These kids believe in what we have and they believe in the never-ending S,” Troutman said. “What’s unique about them is they remain humble. It’s not about the flash, it’s not about all the other outside noise. They come everyday and they work. They earn everything that’s given to them and that’s what’s unique about this team.”
