Amid the NBA offseason, HoopsHype recently ranked the top-27 point guards ahead of the 2026-27 season. However, Rockets fans may not be pleased with their list. The Rockets had only one player make the ranking, veteran guard Fred VanVleet, who came in dead last at No. 27.
While VanVleet’s production may be difficult to predict coming off of an ACL tear, he’s played well in two seasons with Houston. In 133 games for the Rockets, VanVleet is averaging 15.9 points, 6.9 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 1.5 steals. VanVleet was ranked just behind a former two-time NBA champion Jrue Holiday, who came in at No. 26, one of three Trail Blazers guards to make the list.
Additionally, the duo of Marcus Smart and Reed Sheppard was omitted from the list and the honorable mentions. However, it’s worth noting that Sheppard may have been excluded due to a change in position from point guard to shooting guard following the return of VanVleet and the signing of Smart. While he may not post the stats of a top-30 point guard, Smart will have the opportunity to be one of the league’s best floor generals off the bench with his defense, hustle and tenacity.
Given their injury issues at the position last season, Rockets fans are hopeful that point guard is no longer an area of concern heading into the 2026-27 season.
