As we gear up for the 2026 football season, Aggies Wire is breaking down nearly every player on the Texas A&M roster. Throughout the preseason, each profile will highlight a player’s background, recruiting rankings out of high school, and projected role under head coach Mike Elko.
If there was one player who took a major step forward last season, it was linebacker Daymion Sanford. Linebacker has been an interesting position for the Aggies in recent years, largely because they’ve struggled to consistently land top‑end recruits at the spot. While that trend is beginning to shift under Elko, the staff still needs someone in a thin room to emerge as a reliable playmaker alongside Taurean York.
Several players had opportunities, but Sanford rose above the rest and delivered a breakout campaign. He started 10 of 13 games and posted career highs across the board, finishing with 57 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and an interception. His trajectory is unmistakably upward, and if not for the injury he suffered in the Maroon & White Spring Game, he would likely be viewed as a dark‑horse candidate for All‑SEC first‑team honors entering 2026.

Recruiting Rankings (Class of 2023)
The former three‑star prospect was the Texas District 10‑5A Division I Defensive Co‑MVP as a junior and helped lead Paetow to a 15‑1 record and the Class 5A Division I state championship. A two‑time first‑team All‑District selection, he also excelled in track and field, qualifying for the Texas 5A regional meet in the 110‑meter hurdles as a junior.
Depth Chart Outlook
Linebacker might be one of the most intriguing positions on the roster this season. It’s full of question marks, especially surrounding Daymion Sanford, who suffered a lower‑body injury during the Maroon & White Spring Game and is expected to miss a significant portion of the 2026 campaign. Before the injury, Sanford was essentially locked in as the projected starter alongside transfer linebacker Ray Coney. Now, with Sanford sidelined, that job is officially up for grabs as the Aggies look for someone to step into that role while he recovers.
