Everyone loves a good quarterback matchup, and when it comes to that, Texas Tech fans know a thing or two about quarterbacks. Since Mike Leach walked the sidelines of Jones AT&T Stadium, the Red Raiders have enjoyed watching the likes of Kliff Kingsbury, BJ Symons, Texas Tech’s all-time passing leader Graham Harrell, and, of course, Patrick Mahomes.
According to PFF, Patrick Mahomes vs Drake Maye is a top-five quarterback showdown next season. Red Raider fans are no strangers to what Mahomes brings to an offense; they saw it for years, long before the NFL knew what was coming.
The main question will revolve around the health status of Mahomes heading into the 2026 NFL season. The former Texas Tech gunslinger tore his ACL on Dec. 14 against the Los Angeles Chargers. He would have surgery immediately to address the injury. It has been six months since the injury, and the timetable might not align for Mahomes to be back in time for the start of the season. Of course, one should never count out the three-time Super Bowl MVP.
Fans in Lubbock have seen Mahomes suffer a grade 2 AC joint separation in his throwing shoulder against the Kansas Jayhawks and not miss a single game. Not only did he not miss any time, but he set an FBS record for passing yards in a single game against the Oklahoma Sooners with 734 yards. As some recall, Mahomes also broke a bone in his left wrist and didn’t miss the next game.
As far as Mahomes vs Maye goes, this is a great NFL matchup of two top quarterbacks. Mahomes has proven to be among the best quarterbacks in the league, while Maye is just scratching the surface. It should be must-see TV when the New England Patriots visit GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium to take on the Kansas City Chiefs for Monday Night Football in Week 15.
Ironically enough, one could argue the Thanksgiving night game between the Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills might be a better matchup between the top two quarterbacks in the AFC. Patrick Mahomes vs Josh Allen is always a treat, just don’t ask Bills fans about this in the NFL Playoffs.
