People nationwide are organizing a large protest this weekend called the “No Kings Mass Protest” with demonstrators in Abilene and San Angelo planning to join in.
Using the app mobilize.us, the Abilene No Kings demonstration is scheduled for 1-3 p.m. Saturday outside City Hall at 555 Walnut St.
The downtown area will also feature the last day of the Children’s Art & Literacy Festival, but the two events will be separate from each other by at least a quarter-mile.
In San Angelo, the demonstration there is slated for noon-2 p.m. Saturday at Civic League Park, 2 S. Park Street.
The demonstrations are in response to actions taken by the Trump Administration since the president’s inauguration on Jan. 20.
These protests follow on the heels of others held locally, including the May 5 demonstration outside of Anson’s Bluebonnet Detention Center, the April 5 “Hands Off” nationwide protests with demonstrations in San Angelo and Abilene and Feb. 5 demonstrations in both cities as well.
“In America, we don’t put up with would-be kings. NO KINGS is a national day of action and mass mobilization in response to increasing authoritarian excesses and corruption from Trump and his allies,” reads the summary on the invite. “On Saturday, June 14, we’re taking to the streets nationwide. We’re not gathering to feed his ego. We’re building a movement that leaves him behind.”
“No Kings” refers to the founding fathers’ statement of purpose that the new country they were creating would not be governed by kings but by the people.
At the bottom of the invite organizers remind everyone signing up that their marches need to be peaceful.
“A core principle behind all No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action;” they write. “We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.”
