New Texas poll suggests Talarico could win US Senate race

A new poll shows Democrats could have a chance to flip a U.S. Senate seat in Texas.

Texas Public Opinion Research (TPOR) released a poll Tuesday, April 28, showing state Rep. James Talarico, D-Austin, leading both candidates now duking it out in the Republican primary runoff — incumbent U.S. Sen. John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton. The poll surveyed 1,018 likely general election voters between April 17 and April 20.

The poll found Talarico leading Cornyn 44% to 41%, largely fueled by support from Black, Latino and college-educated voters. The poll found Talarico besting Paxton by an even wider margin, 46% to 41%.

The findings paint a grim picture for Republicans, as neither of their candidates seems to be resonating with voters ahead of the November General Election.

The following are other key takeaways from the TPOR poll:

The winner of the May 26 primary runoff election between Cornyn and Paxton will face Talarico in the Nov. 3 General Election.
